The History of Popcorn

1948

The first popcorn kernel that was ever found was in New Mexico. The kernels were found deep in a dry cave, called the "Bat Cave". This amazing discovery was found by Herbert Dick and Earle Smith in 1948. The kernels have been carbon dated to be 5,600 years old. Then there was evidence of popcorn through Central and South America, Peru, Guatemala, and Mexico. It is proved that the Aztec Indians used popcorn not only for eating, but also for decoration in clothing. Later, after colonists started to move closer to North America, they didn't only use popcorn as a food, but they also ate it with milk and sugar for breakfast like cereal.

1885

Then, the first popcorn machine was made by Charles Cretors in Chicago. Since the machine was mobile, it was able to roam the streets, along with a gas burner. The popcorn machine was almost, always found near the movies when they ended. That made popcorn the best movie snack. Even during the Great Depression, popcorn was the only food that was affordable to everyone. Popcorn was also sold at general stores, concession stands, carnivals, and circuses. They also used it for was that they would make the popcorn with a small amout of molasses, creating a food like today's kettle corn.

1981

After the invention of a television, people didn't used to come to the movie theaters like they did, So when less people went to the theaters, the consuption of popcorn dropped. But, the consumption quickly rasied when people started eating popcorn at home. The microvavable popcorn caused people to eat popcorn at home to skyrocket. Now, americans eat atleast 17 billion quarts of popcorn per year and the numbers just keep getting bigger.
